What Is a Polyurethane Sieve Plate
A polyurethane sieve plate is a screening component manufactured from cast polyurethane elastomer. The plate is used in vibrating screens, high-frequency screens, and dewatering screens for sizing, classification, and dewatering of materials such as ores, coal, aggregates, and sand. Polyurethane provides excellent wear resistance, elasticity, and self-cleaning properties. The plate is lightweight compared to steel plates, reducing the load on the screen equipment and extending the service life of the screen components.
Self-Cleaning and Anti-Clogging Performance
It offers self-cleaning performance. The elastomeric properties of polyurethane allow the screen apertures to flex slightly during operation, dislodging particles that would otherwise become wedged. This reduces the frequency of cleaning and minimizes downtime. The plates are also resistant to blinding from moisture and fines. The high open area – typically 35% to 60% – provides good throughput while maintaining separation efficiency.
Material Selection and Durability
Polyurethane sieve plates are available in two primary types. Polyester-type polyurethane offers high mechanical strength, abrasion resistance, and oil resistance. Polyether-type polyurethane offers excellent hydrolysis resistance and low-temperature performance, making it suitable for wet applications and environments with high moisture content. The hardness ranges from 85 to 95 Shore A, with softer plates used for fine screening and harder plates used for coarse, high-impact applications. The plates can be manufactured with a steel reinforcement frame embedded in the polyurethane for additional strength.
Applications Across Industries
They are used in a range of screening applications. In coal preparation plants, they screen and dewater coal. In mineral processing, they classify ores. In aggregate production, they screen sand and gravel. The plate is also used in the chemical and recycling industries. They are generally not suitable for strong acids, strong alkalis, or applications above 80°C.
