Stainless Steel Wedge Wire Johnson Rotary Drum Screens

A stainless steel wedge wire Johnson rotary drum screen – also known as a rotary filter drum – is a cylindrical screening component used in rotary drum filtration equipment. The drum is manufactured from V-shaped stainless steel profile wires resistance-welded to a grid of support rods. The drum rotates slowly, with the screening surface continuously exposed to the feed material. The rotating action ensures that the entire screening surface is utilized, maximizing throughput and screening efficiency. The all-welded construction provides high mechanical strength and dimensional stability, enabling the drum to withstand continuous operation.

The wedge wire rotary drum screen delivers high flow capacity because of its large screening surface area and continuous rotation. The V-shaped slots provide high open area – typically between 18% and 40% – allowing liquid to pass through while retaining solids. The slot geometry prevents particles from wedging, reducing cleaning frequency. Slot openings range from 0.05 mm to 2.5 mm, with common applications using 0.2 mm to 1.0 mm. The drum maintains its circular shape and concentricity during rotation, which is critical for proper sealing against the feed box.

The drum is constructed with profile wires on the outside surface and support rods on the inside. The profile wires and support rods are welded at every intersection. For rotary applications, the support rods are spaced more closely to resist cyclic loading. Profile wire sizes of 1×2 mm, 1.5×3 mm, and 2×4 mm are recommended. Additional circumferential stiffener rings are added for larger diameter drums to maintain roundness. Materials include stainless steel 304 and 316L, with 2205 duplex steel available for corrosive environments.
