Trommel Screen Drum

A trommel screen drum is a large-diameter cylindrical screening component used in rotary screening equipment. The drum is mounted on a frame with a slight incline – typically 3 to 5 degrees – and rotated by a drive mechanism. Material is fed into the elevated end, and as the drum rotates, the material tumbles and screens against the cylindrical surface. Fine particles pass through the slots, while oversize material moves down the incline to the discharge end. The trommel screen is one of the most common screening devices used in mining, aggregate, and municipal solid waste processing due to its simple operation and high throughput capacity.

The drum delivers high throughput because of its large screening surface area and the tumbling action created by rotation. The tumbling action continuously presents fresh material to the screening surface, maximizing the opportunity for particles to pass through the slots. The open area of a wedge wire trommel screen typically ranges from 15% to 55%, providing good flow capacity while maintaining separation accuracy. For coarser applications such as aggregate screening, perforated plate construction with holes up to 50 mm in diameter is available. For finer applications such as sand and gravel screening, wedge wire construction with slot openings down to 0.5 mm is recommended.

It is built for heavy-duty operation. The cylinder is constructed with a robust framework of support rods and stiffener rings, with the screening media welded to the support structure. For wedge wire drums, the V-shaped profile wires are resistance-welded to longitudinal support rods at every intersection. For perforated plate drums, the plate is rolled into a cylinder and welded along the seam, with additional stiffener rings added for larger diameters. Materials include stainless steel 304 and 316L for corrosion resistance, with carbon steel available for non-corrosive applications.
