Oil Sand Control Pipe

An oil sand control pipe – also known as a Johnson sand control screen or well screen – is a downhole filtration component used in oil and gas wells. The pipe consists of an outer wedge wire screen jacket and an inner API-standard perforated base pipe. The wedge wire screen jacket is manufactured from V-shaped stainless steel profile wires resistance-welded to longitudinal support rods. The screen jacket is fitted over the base pipe and welded or mechanically attached at each end. The pipe is installed in the wellbore where it allows formation fluids to enter the well while preventing sand from entering the wellbore.

The V-shaped slot geometry ensures effective sand retention. The slots are narrow at the outside surface and wider internally, preventing sand particles from becoming wedged. Slot openings range from 0.02 mm to 3.0 mm, with common oil and gas applications using 0.06 mm to 0.5 mm. The slot size is selected based on the formation sand D50 size – typically one-half to two-thirds of the D50. Slot tolerance is held to ±0.025 mm. The open area typically ranges from 15% to 30%, providing good flow capacity while maintaining sand retention.

The oil sand control pipe consists of two main components. The base pipe is API-standard casing or tubing material such as J55, N80, or P110. The base pipe is perforated with holes to allow fluid flow. The screen jacket is manufactured from wedge wire and fitted over the base pipe. The jacket is secured by end rings welded or mechanically attached to the base pipe. Materials include stainless steel 304 and 316L for the screen jacket, with 2205 duplex steel and other corrosion-resistant alloys available for wells with H2S, CO2, or high chloride content.
