Wedge‑Wire Johnson Water Well Screen

A well filter pipe – also known as a water well screen – is a cylindrical screening component installed in water wells, irrigation wells, and geothermal wells. The pipe is manufactured from V-shaped stainless steel profile wires resistance-welded to longitudinal support rods. The pipe allows groundwater to enter the well while preventing sand and other formation particles from entering the wellbore. The all-welded construction provides high mechanical strength, enabling the pipe to withstand external collapse pressures and internal burst pressures. The pipe is installed as part of the well casing string.

The V-shaped slot geometry ensures effective sand retention. The slots are narrow at the outside surface and wider internally, preventing sand particles from becoming wedged. Slot openings range from 0.1 mm to 6.0 mm, with the size selected based on the formation sand. The slot tolerance is held to tight standards. The open area is high – up to 60% – providing good flow capacity with low pressure drop. The high open area reduces pumping energy requirements and extends pump life.

The well filter pipe is manufactured from materials selected based on the water quality and operating conditions. Standard materials include stainless steel 304 and 316L, which provide good corrosion resistance for fresh water and mild saline water. For more demanding environments, we offer 2205 duplex steel. The pipe can also be manufactured with a low-carbon steel base pipe and a stainless steel screen jacket.
