What Is a Wedge Wire Screen Tube
A wedge wire screen tube is a cylindrical filtration component manufactured by winding V-shaped stainless steel profile wire around and resistance-welding it to a cage of longitudinal support rods. The result is a rigid, all-welded tube with continuous V-shaped slots. The screen tube is used primarily in downhole applications for sand control in oil, gas, and water wells. It can also serve as a filter element in industrial filtration systems. The design allows formation fluids or water to pass through while blocking sand and other solid particles. The all-welded construction gives the screen tube high structural strength, enabling it to withstand external collapse pressures and internal burst pressures common in deep well environments.
Slot Design and Sand Control Performance
The V-shaped slot is what makes this screen tube effective for sand control. The slot opening is narrow at the outside surface and wider internally. This shape allows fluid to pass while trapping sand particles on the outside. When a sand particle enters the slot, it touches the wire edge at only two points, so it cannot wedge tightly. This reduces the risk of plugging. The slot opening is sized according to the formation sand – typically selected at one-half to two-thirds of the formation sand D50 size. Slot openings are manufactured from 0.025 mm to 3.0 mm, with common oil and gas applications using 0.06 mm to 0.5 mm. Slot tolerance can be held to ±0.025 mm, ensuring consistent sand retention across the entire screen length.
Construction Details
The screen tube consists of three main components. The V-shaped profile wire forms the outer filtration surface. The longitudinal support rods provide structural strength and maintain the cylindrical shape. The end connections allow attachment to the base pipe or to adjacent sections. Standard profile wire sizes include 2.3×3.5 mm, 3.0×5.0 mm, and 3.2×6.0 mm. The number of support rods around the circumference determines the collapse strength. For deep well applications where external pressures exceed 3000 psi, additional support rods are added. The screen tube is commonly supplied as a screen jacket that slides over a perforated base pipe. The base pipe provides additional mechanical strength and distributes the flow. Screen tubes can also be manufactured as stand-alone screens with threaded end connections for direct installation.
Material Selection for Downhole Conditions
The operating environment determines material selection. Stainless steel 304 is suitable for fresh water wells. Stainless steel 316L offers better corrosion resistance for saline water and mild corrosive conditions. For oil and gas wells with hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, or high chloride content, we offer 2205 duplex stainless steel, 904L, and Hastelloy. The base pipe – when supplied – is typically API standard casing or tubing material such as J55, N80, or P110. For special corrosive conditions, the base pipe can also be manufactured from corrosion-resistant alloys.
Applications
Wedge wire screen tubes are used in various well types. In oil and gas wells, they control sand production to prevent equipment erosion and formation collapse. In water wells, they prevent sand from entering the pump. In geothermal wells, they handle high-temperature brine. In salt lake lithium extraction, they resist chloride corrosion. The screen tube is also used in gravel pack completions, open hole completions, and cased hole completions. It works in vertical, deviated, and horizontal wells.
