What Is a Stainless Steel Filter Basket
It is a removable filtration component installed inside a filter housing, pipeline strainer, or tank. It is manufactured in three primary constructions: perforated plate, wedge wire, and woven wire mesh. The basket is typically cylindrical or slightly conical in shape, with an open top for fluid entry and a closed or semi-closed bottom. A flange, rim, or lifting handle at the top allows for easy insertion and removal from the housing. The basket captures solid particles, debris, and contaminants from the fluid stream while allowing the clean liquid to pass through. It is a serviceable component designed to be periodically removed, cleaned, and reinstalled, making it a cost-effective solution for continuous filtration operations.
Construction Types and Performance Characteristics
The three construction types each serve different filtration requirements. Perforated plate baskets are formed from stainless steel sheet with punched round or slotted holes. They offer high mechanical strength, good flow capacity, and resistance to impact, making them suitable for coarse filtration and heavy-duty applications. Wedge wire baskets are constructed from V-shaped profile wires resistance-welded to support rods. The V-shaped slots are narrow on the outside and wider internally, which prevents particles from wedging and allows for effective backwashing. Woven wire mesh baskets are lined with stainless steel mesh over a perforated or rod support frame, providing finer filtration for applications requiring higher precision.
Material Selection and Corrosion Resistance
The basket material is selected based on the fluid being processed and the operating environment. Standard material options include stainless steel 304, 304L, 316, and 316L. For more demanding conditions, we offer 2205 duplex stainless steel, 904L, Hastelloy C276, and titanium. These materials provide resistance to corrosion from acids, alkalis, salts, and other aggressive media. The basket can also be supplied with electropolished surfaces for applications in the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries where hygiene and cleanability are required.
